Gender representation in Advertising
How might the following objects be ‘generated’ through advertising, given that both sexes will use the product?
A Sports Car:
· A sports car could be advertised for men by having an attractive woman in it or leaning on the car.
· A sports car could be advertised for women by having an alpha female driving the car.
A Diving Watch
· A diving watch could be advertised for either men or women by showing an athletic good looking man/women diving into a pool.
Bottled Beer
· Bottled beer could be advertised for either men or women by showing a man/women getting served by an attractive bartender of the opposite sex.
Toilet Paper
· Toilet paper could be advertised by a cute baby or a puppy playing around in the toilet paper showing how soft it is.
Deodorant
· Deodorant could be advertised for either men or women by showing an athletic man/women looking sweaty and putting on deodorant after doing a sport.
Cigarettes
· Cigarettes could be advertised for women by showing an alpha female looking stressed out at first but after smoking she looks relaxed and ready to carry on doing her hard work.
· Cigarettes could be advertised for men by showing a group of men going out to smoke after watching a bad match of football.
An IPod
· An iPod could be advertised for either men or women by showing people dancing with their headphones in and having a good time.
Trainers
· Trainers could be advertised for men by zooming in on to an athletic mans trainers while he’s running.
· Trainers could be advertised for women by showing a woman jumping around in her trainers whilst playing tennis.
A Games Console
· A games console could be advertised for women by making the colour of the console pink.
An Airline
· An airline could be advertised for me by showing a good looking stewardesses serving a man refreshments.
